Technical Illustrator
About the Role
Crescendo Solutions LLC is seeking a qualified Technical Illustrator to lead illustration production on U.S. Department of Defense technical documentation programs. Employment is contingent upon successful contract award and funding.
The Technical Illustrator serves as the illustration lead for one or more technical documentation programs. The role establishes illustration style guides, reviews and approves work produced by junior illustrators, builds and maintains CGM authoring templates, and produces the most complex illustrations directly. This is a hands-on senior role that combines art production with technical leadership and standards compliance.

Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain illustration style guides, templates, and CGM authoring standards for assigned programs.
- Produce complex illustrations including exploded views, cutaways, schematics, wiring diagrams, and isometric assemblies from engineering and OEM source data.
- Review illustrations produced by junior staff against S1000D business rules and BREX requirements; provide written, actionable feedback.
- Lead conversion of legacy artwork (raster, AutoCAD, Microstation, IGES, STEP) to S1000D-compliant CGM.
- Build and maintain CGM linking and hotspot data to support IETM interactivity.
- Interface directly with engineering, customer technical staff, and the contractor program team to resolve illustration questions.
- Mentor junior illustrators and contribute to interviewing and onboarding of new illustration staff.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in graphic design, illustration, engineering technology, or a related field — OR equivalent demonstrable portfolio.
- A minimum of six (6) years of professional experience producing technical illustrations for U.S. DoD or aerospace documentation programs.
- Demonstrated production experience under S1000D Issue 4.0 or later (illustration business rules, BREX, CGM authoring).
- Advanced proficiency with Adobe Illustrator, Arbortext IsoDraw, PTC Creo Illustrate, or equivalent.
- Demonstrated experience leading or reviewing other illustrators' work.
- U.S. citizenship.
- Active or ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DoD Secret security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with MIL-STD-40051-2, MIL-STD-3001, ATA iSpec 2200, or DITA documentation environments.
- Experience producing illustrations for aviation, ground systems, or naval platforms.
- Experience integrating with Common Source Database (CSDB) tools and revision workflows.
- Active DoD Secret clearance.
